Horses understand what it is to be chased, preyed upon, manipulated and coerced, this is all par for the course of being a prey animal, perhaps even more so in domestication.
50 million years of looking like someone's dinner has shaped them. They are incredibly perceptive, quick to react, agile and intelligent. "Run first" then look back is the way of the horse. But long before the need to run, they are scanning their environment, and every one in it for signs of disharmony, anxiety, aggression, there is no room for error or hesitation when life is on the line. If its not safe there is no joy. Only in a state of safety can peace and joy exist.
Humans in contrast are masters of the "brave face". We say we are ok when we are in fact "far" from ok. We knowingly walk into dangerous situations just to grow courage. We knowingly regularly risk our welfare for mundane tasks, resulting in desensitised numbed instincts, low self worth and all too commonly symptoms of compounded anxiety.
Some stresses however cannot be avoided, especially in a human centric world, but concerns of 'who to talk to' and who can be trusted can lead to further anxiety, especially with sensitive information.
This is why we work exclusively with horses and other non verbal animals. They are extremely good at discretion! The fact they are non verbal means they cannot and will never share your story.
What goes on during a session with an experienced and qualified equine therapist remains in that space providing the perfect safe container for deeper facilitated release, processing, change and growth.
With the skill to measure personal stress and clearing residual trauma trapped in the nervous system we regain the ability to read stressful situations for what they actually are.
Triggers lose their potency often reducing from a full blown red flag to more self regulated discernment.... sometimes dissolving all together. Through learning to trust our innate perceptions of early warning (neuroception) and expanding our awareness, we can adjust our course accordingly.
Connecting with nature in this way gives us the opportunity to correctly place our humanity in a biodiverse world, one which we are fundamentally part of. With 94% of living biomass being humans and our domesticated animals (David Attenborough 2023), connecting with nature is a much needed skill we need to preserve and return home to, again and again.
